By far, the best place we could have anchored for the month while visiting Acadia and having friends join us. The prevailing southerly winds make the mooring field at Henry R Able & Co Boat Yard a bit rolly on windy days, but tucked up here between the mouth of Sargent Cove and the ledges, we had calm days and nights even in 25+ kt SW winds. At extreme low tide we still had 4+feet beneath our keel. Anchor set well in thick mud with the chain coming up (mostly) clean.

The nearby Henry R Able & Co Boat Yard isn't on Waterway Guide yet, but you can rent a mooring from them on Dockwa for only $35/night. Don't skip Able's Lobster Pound! They are open noon to 3pm for lunch and then 4:30pm-8:30pm for dinner. When anchored in Somes Sound, you can also use Able's dinghy dock for a daily donation. They have a pump-out boat that services the moorings, but if you arrange it with them, you can tie up to their service dock for a $5 pump-out and water (for a donation). If you pre-arrange it, they will also let you park a vehicle here. Or the Acadia shuttle stop is less than a half mile away to take you all over the island.

The scenery is stunning and the wildlife is plentiful! There is a pair of bald eagles teaching their fledgling to fish and the seals hang out on the ledges at mid-tide and even come near the boat on quiet days and nights. The beauty and quiet here make this a hidden gem. There's no ferry wake nor tight anchorages around the ever-increasing moorings.

We anchored here for a strong trough that brought winds SE 20 knots gusting 40 knots for about 18 hours. Holding was excellent in mud at 12' MLW, and this cove lets you tuck in. A small amount of fetch built at high tide from the creek to the south, but it was generally fairly comfortable. The mountains, however, did create some swirling winds and amplified the conditions more than we expected. Good wind protection from the east and southeast, more exposed from the southwest through north. It was not a calm sojourn, but it was safe. We think this spot was more comfortable than we would've been at Able's moorings or anchored in Somes Harbor. The area is gorgeous, with tons of seals and porpoises cruising through. No shore access unless you take the dinghy up to Ables Boatyard.
