The trip up the river is longer than some, but the results were worth it. The river is well marked and the depths are all over 10 feet MLW all the way to the destination. The anchorage icon is 10 feet MLW and where we dropped the anchor was 9 feet. The anchor grabbed immediately and set well. We were planning on spending a couple of days here so we let out a little extra scope, just in case. All was well and we were clear of the half dozen crab traps that were set in the anchorage.
Long Point is almost ideal. It is on the inside bend of the river that provides protection from all directions except south, where there is some fetch to worry about. We stayed several days due to high winds and had no problem with current, waves, and wakes. We even managed to get to shore in Mathews, going up the river past Town Point Landing near high tide and into the center of the town by navigating Put-in-Creek all the way in to the kayak launch. It was definitely worth the adventure.
The only negative occurred one evening when a cold front came through and hit us with 45 mph winds from the south. Waves were not a problem but the winds did pull the anchor and moved us over fifty feet off our anchor position before we managed to get the engines started to relieve the pressure on the anchor chain. Allowing the anchor time to reset and the strong frontal winds to pass left us safe and secure for the rest of the evening.
There are two town landings to take Fido to if necessary, Town Point Landing and Williams Wharf, both about a half mile from the anchorage. Cell phone reception was very good and shopping and just walking around the fascinating town of Mathews is only a high tide away.
The East River is definitely a good place to drop the anchor for more than a night. We will be back.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Scenic and quiet heading up the river with plenty of room and depth. Shared the bay with a Cat and had plenty of room, but in the actual little bay can probably only fit three or four boats. Private property all around, no real landing areas. Cell reception was OK, no internet. No issues at night, but lots of power boats during the day going to and fro and some boats towing tubes, but after sunset very quiet. Not many bugs at all.

Some boat traffic but not annoying. We ar told that, at high tide you can take your Dink up a side creek just across from the anchorage and go all the way up to Matthews. We did not try it. Good cell reception ATT Verizon and T-Mobile. Good holding in mud. Few bugs. A quiet and pleasant anchorage.
