NC: AIWW MIle 240.7, Onslow Swing Bridge, Scheduled Closures

  • Date Reported: May 3, 2025
  • Reporter: Bob Sherer (Bob423)
  • Source: CG 5th District LNM 0540/24
  • Description:

Mariners are advised that a construction firm, on behalf of U. S. Marine Corps. Base Camp Lejeune, will continue to construct a new bridge to replace the Onslow Beach Swing Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, mile 240.7, at Camp Lejeune, NC. Construction activities are expected to finish on May 30, 2025.

    Weekday schedule:

    • 8:00 to Noon: Height restricted to 12 feet·
    • Noon to 1:00 pm: No height restriction, bridge opens on request
    • 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm: Height restricted to 12 feet
    • 5:00 to 7:00 pm: Opens on top of the hour, no height restriction
    • 7:00 pm to 7:50 am the next day: Opens on request, no height restriction

The normal bridge opening schedule applies on weekends and Federal Holidays.

Vessels unable to safely transit the new bridge with the reduced clearances and unable to adjust their voyage plan may transit through the bridges upon arrival, if at least a 24-hour prior notice is given to the onsite project foreman at 910-520-1319.

Note: The new bridge is 14 feet high at MHW. The old bridge is 12 feet at MHW. If you need between 12 to 14 feet, the bridge tender will open the old bridge on top of the hour between 8:00 am to Noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm so you can pass under the 14 foot high new bridge. Contact the bridge tender for additional details at 910-440-7376.

Two barges, a support vessel, and crew boat will be operating or stationed in the vicinity of the existing and new bridges. Temporary work platforms will be in place for the duration of construction of the new bridge and demolition of the existing bridge. The work barges, work vessels and bridge tender may be reached on VHF-FM channels 13 and 16, and the onsite project foreman may be contacted at 910-520-1319, when work is in progress or vessels are operating the area. Mariners should navigate the waterway with extreme caution and due regard for prevailing conditions on the waterway.

We arrived at the bridge in the early morning (06:55).
The bridge keeper stated that the next opening was 07:00.
After we completed our transit through the bridge, he stayed open for a couple other boats , so they would not need to wait for the 08:00 opening.
It seems that the "on demand" statement is incorrect. It is better to call for clarification.

I passed through 4/16. I had contacted the swing bridge opporator earlier in the day. She informed me that the construction bridge was closed but would open between 12:00 and 1:00. If I got there during this time span she would open for me. I arrived at 12:30 and the bridge opened as I approached. Didn't even have to slow down. The work barges were not in the channel and caused no obstruction. I could see the new bridge still open for at least another hour.

The bridge operator told me that on some days the new bridge will be open all day. It depends on what they are doing. Best to call in advance.
