A Nature Preserve to Visit While Cruising

There's nothing like cruising through nature preserves. By boat, you can be out of the main channel and immersed in the local flora and fauna in a matter of minutes. These remote areas' solace and beauty are unlike anywhere else, and Cumberland Island National Seashore was one such place we kept returning and exploring.

Cumberland Island National Seashore

comprises the Southernmost islands of Georgia's coast, just south of their Golden Isles. Previously owned by the Carnegie Family as a winter retreat for Hunting and outdoor activities, Cumberland Island is now part of our public lands for all of us to enjoy. Along with the diverse flora and fauna, you can also learn about the island's history through the ranger-led tours.

The logistics of cruising to Cumberland Island play a big part in why we keep coming back. Located just off the ICW, there are protected, secluded anchorages and well-maintained park docks where you can get to shore. We've comfortably held through heavy thunderstorms here; there is a place to anchor in any weather. Additionally, Cumberland Island National Seashore is dog-friendly, which is not guaranteed in any nature preserve!

The flora and fauna, however, are what keep us coming back to Cumberland Island. Most notably, you can find wild horses grazing on the grasses or galloping on the beach. The diversity of ecosystems, with miles of trails, gives you endless places to explore. In the salt marshes comprising the Western area of the islands, you can find crabs, herons, and tons of wildlife. Watching the tide come in and out, transforming the ecosystem, gives you a novel view all day long. In the maritime forest comprising the inner part of the island, you can marvel at the massive dunes, and Spanish Moss hanging low on many of the hardwoods, and if you hike at sunrise or dusk, you might find white-tailed deer. On the beach, you can walk through driftwood piles and shorebirds looking for their next meal. At every turn, there's something spectacular to see.

There are many nature preserves all over North America that can be visited by boat, so if you have the chance, we recommend taking a slower-paced trip and exploring the wildlife and nature side of cruising this Spring. Let us know in the comments what natural area you're most excited to see!
