ElectroSea was the subject of a Waterway Guide Editor's Choice a couple of years ago. Their ElectroStrainer technology had just won an award for excellence in design and application, and the solution of keeping marine growth from clogging strainers and lines was good news. The company continues to enjoy accolades for its systems. Now, the engineers there have tackled another pesky problem.
Leaking pumps are the irritation of boat owners, captains and crew. If you've spent any time in an engine room or around raw water pumps, you know that seals leak. And raw water in the boat is a nuisance, if not outright dangerous. Could there be a better design? ElectroSea tackled the root causes with their series of SeaStrong magnetic-drive pumps designed to withstand the problems that cause pumps to fail.
Most of us don't think about what makes a pump work or fail. All we know is that when the raw water pickup pump fails, or leaks, repairs are costly and always seem to come at inopportune times. With ElectroSea's second-generation design, they introduced a completely redesigned pump head with composite impeller, eliminating more than leaky seals, and addressing many of the issues that plague traditional pumps.
Magnetic-drive pumps do not have mechanical seals that can leak. But they will suffer damage or fail when run dry. And it takes only a few minutes for irreversible damage to occur. ElectroSea tackled the issue of heat and friction and has now designed a pump with extended run-dry capability with their third-generation, SeaStrong Silver Bullet RDP – Run-Dry Protection.
Invoking their forward-thinking approach, the ElectroSea team pushed the envelope in terms of the time that a pump can run dry without failing. Designing and building their own pump heads, eliminating low flow areas, and employing components that reduce friction were the objectives.
President of ElectroSea, Jeff Panek, said, "We are incredibly proud to introduce SeaStrong Silver Bullet RDP, which represents a significant advancement in magnetic-drive pump technology. This pump provides unparalleled run-dry protection and reinforces our commitment to delivering the most reliable and innovative solutions to the marine industry."
In several meetings with ElectroSea leadership and engineering teams one observation continues to stand out; they are boaters who listen to their customers and look for ways to make their products better and the experience of being on the water more enjoyable. That approach, in and of itself, is award-winning.
