Spanish Cay

  • Location: Little Bahama Bank
  • Lat / Lon: N 26° 56.132' / W 077° 31.525'
  • Depth: 8'-11'
  • Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
  • Description:

In settled conditions it is possible to anchor anywhere along the bank side of Spanish Cay. The farther east you move along the island, the better the holding becomes. On the west end of the island near the end of the runway the bottom is marl, covered with a thin layer of sand, and while day anchoring is possible, overnight or unattended anchoring is not recommended.

The best conditions are south and east of the marina breakwaters in 8-11’ of water. The sand in this area is deeper; however, there is an ever-present swell that permeates through the narrow cut between Spanish and smaller Goat Cay to the ESE. If the winds are under 15 kts, most boats will sit comfortably at anchor, but above 15 kts the area can become rough and uncomfortable very quickly.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
