Indian Hole Point - Thompson Bay

  • Location: Long Island
  • Lat / Lon: N 23° 21.129' / W 075° 09.243'
  • Depth: 7'-9'
  • Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
  • Description:

Indian Hole Point forms the northwest corner of Thompson Bay and offers an additional degree of protection during the enhanced west and north winds that accompany a cold front. While the protection from the wind is better than in the open parts of the Bay the prudent skipper has to balance that with the less than ideal holding in the area. The seabed on the north side of Thompson Bay is mostly marl covered with a thin layer of sand and grass, making the holding tenuous. In the area of Indian Hole Point there are bowls of sand that can provide acceptable holding but it could take several attempts to find a suitable patch of sand. It is definitely not a place where you can throw your anchor over and relax. The best holding is closer to shore in this area

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
