Black Point Cay

  • Lat / Lon: N 26° 23.987' / W 077° 01.444'
  • Depth: 8'-10'
  • Tide: 2.5'-3.0'
  • Description:

Black Point Cay is tucked into a shallow bay on the eastern shore of Great Abaco and is a great choice for boaters looking for an anchorage close to the North Bar Channel, but also out of the swells that come sweeping through the cut.

The anchorage, located just off the usual route for boaters traveling between Marsh Harbour and Little Harbour is a quiet and convenient spot to spend the night in settled conditions. It is a good choice for crews wishing to snorkel on the Sandy Cay Reef inside the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park. For weathering a cold front, a viable strategy is to anchor at Black Point Cay in the approaching south-west phase of a cold front with a planned move to the Tilloo Cay- Shearpin anchorage as the winds clock into the northeast. The trip between the two anchorages can be choppy in winds over 20 knots, but it is only 3.5nm and conditions settle rapidly as you approach Tilloo Cay.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
