Big Fish Cay - The Coral Garden
- Lat / Lon: N 27° 03.169' / W 077° 50.375'
- Depth: 9'-12'
- Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
- Description:
The Coral Garden is an area of small coral heads over a sand and marl bottom. The deepest part of the garden is only about 6β at low tide and much of the area is only 4β deep. Unlike other parts of the Fish Cays, there is little current so even young or inexperienced snorkelers can feel like Jacques Cousteau in this pretty but benign dive site. The anchorage is also a good choice for those wishing to visit the Fish Cays when the winds shift into the south. The holding is good in 9-12β of water, provided you avoid areas of heavy grass. In the spring and early summer the waters teem with bioluminescent organisms that can produce magical shimmers of green when the surface of the water is disturbed.
DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
