- Description:
The south anchorage at Rat Cay is normally only used in settled conditions, or to gain protection in a strong north wind. Wind from any direction other than north will tend to hold your vessel beam to the current at some point in the tide cycle, which will give rise to an uncomfortable roll. The anchorage is in a narrow band of shallower water between the rocky south shore of Rat Cay and the deeper water of the channel leading to Rat Cay Cut. There is a small strip of sand where it is possible to beach a tender on the eastern end of the shoreline but be aware that there is a very strong current that only slows long enough to reverse. Be sure to set an anchor for your dinghy in addition to dragging it up on the sand.
DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
